How to paint a skylight ?

Painting skylights is a simple and effective way to cool the interior of a building and simultaneously reinforce and protect the skylight, while maintaining translucent properties to allow brightness to pass through.

The problem

Skylights are bringing natural light into buildings. However, their effect can be ambivalent. In summer, they can generate excessive heat, therefore increasing indoor temperature and discomfort levels, leading to increased energy consumption for cooling.

Additionally, the skylights are exposed to weathering and undergo deterioration over time.

The solution

RD Coatings offers a simple, fast, and effective solution for painting skylights with RD-Multiprim and RD-Aquatop PU in white color.

This combination will protect the composite and plastic material while allowing light to pass through. Infrared rays are reflected, reducing heat transfer indoors.

RD-Multiprim is a universal adhesion primer for non-ferrous and smooth surfaces. Specially developed to adhere to surfaces known to be difficult like plastics.

This quick-drying primer serves as a bond between the surface and the subsequent layers, ensuring perfect adhesion of the entire system.

RD-Aquatop PU is a fast drying high-performance single-component polyurethane enamel. Available in mat, satin and glossy. For optimal results, we recommend choosing the “Glossy” version in white color to keep the translucency.

Application conditions and work preparation

Environmental conditions (general requirements) :

• Minimum air and substrate temperatures: 10°C / 50°F for 24 hours.

• Maximum surface temperature: 55°C / 130°F.

• Maximum relative humidity: 90%.

• Surface temperature must be at least 3°C / 5°F above dew point.

• No threat of rain for 4 hours.

/!\ Notes

• There must be no condensation on the surface during application and drying. Caution when working at the beginning or end of the season!

• Drying rates for water-based coatings depend on temperature, humidity and wind.

• From 15°C / 59°F, working conditions are comfortable and enable higher productivity.

• If the project is located in a very hot area with very intense sunshine during the day, avoid applying the system when the sun is most intense on the surface, and prefer to work early in the morning, late in the afternoon or in the shade.

Surface preparation

The surface must always be clean, dry, free of grease and contaminants. Rust or loose paint must be removed.

Accepted methods and standards :

• High-pressure cleaning.

Moss and mildew should be removed down to the roots using appropriate cleaners.

RD-Eco Powerclean

Use RD-Eco PowerClean just before application to ensure that the surface is clean and degreased. Particularly in the presence of stubborn dirt, oil, grease or pollution on the surface, or where there is a long lap of time between surface preparation and the start of the application.

Application materials

We recommend applying the products with a spray gun to achieve an aesthetic result without marks.

RD-Eco PowerClean

Low-pressure sprayer. Allow to work, then rinse.
